    The Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) is a four-digit code that categorizes the industries that companies belong to based on their business activities. Standard Industrial Classification codes were mostly replaced by the six-digit North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). SIC codes are important when you are processing credit cards, some businesses as the ones who are Emerging Markets get special rates from the card brands.
